College Courses

We believe that all students should be offered a curriculum that is personalised to their needs.  For some students, college courses offer vocational learning opportunities that perfectly suit their learning styles and career aspirations. We work closely with Redwood College and Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College to offer students high quality vocational courses in a range of subjects, leading to level 1 or level 2 qualifications as appropriate and offering clear progression routes onto further education, apprenticeships or training.

We currently have students on the following courses:

CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND CARE

CACHE Level 2 Award in Child Development and Care

Course Description

These qualifications encourage an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to care for young children, focusing on children’s growth, learning and development. There are also units to help with self-development.

This course takes place at Redwood College in Greenford one day a week for Year 10 studnets and two days a week for the current year 11 students. 

This course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to childcare settings and provision
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities of carers and early years workers
  • Respecting and valuing children
  • Understanding factors that affect child development
  • Using play to build confidence
  • Listening and talking with a young child
  • Growth and development of young children

Children’s play and leisure activities

Assessment    

All 7 units must be successfully completed to achieve certification.Qualification Target and Tiers

This course is a level 2 qualification equivalent to a GCSE grade A-C.

16+ Progression

Successful completion of the course could lead to an apprenticeship in Childcare.  Redwood Education and Skills have opportunities for Post 16 progression to either a Study Programme (Aspire) or traineeships that may ultimately lead to employment or a route into apprenticeships.

 

ENGINEERING

Pearson BTEC - Level 2 First Award in Engineering

Course description

This course provides an opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the engineering sector. Participation in a variety of practical units will develop a range of personal skills and techniques that are essential for performance in the engineering sector. Students will learn about the world of engineering, study different materials and learn about product use, waste management and the potential impact engineering has on the environment.

Success in this course can lead to starting points in manufacturing, the automotive electrical and mechanical sectors.

Students will complete written assignments, develop practical skills and undertake engineering projects.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided by the College.

Assessment

There are 4 units, 2 of which are mandatory. Students must complete all 4 to achieve qualification. There is an externally set exam for Unit 1, whereas, the remaining units are coursework.

Qualification Target and Tiers

Students may achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

16+ Progression

Successful completion of course could support with progression to a Post 16 college. Redwood Education & Skills have opportunities for Post 16 progression to either Study Programme (Aspire) or traineeships that may ultimately lead to employment or a route into apprenticeships.

 

CONSTRUCTION 

Pearson BTEC First Certificate in Construction and the Build Environment- Level 2

Course Description

If you are looking for a career as a plumber, bricklayer, carpenter and joiner, or are considering a career in architecture, site management or design, these qualifications are ideal.  The courses are aimed at learners who are looking to gain or widen their knowledge, skills and experience of the construction industry. 

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Brickwork
  • Plastering
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Plumbing
  • Carpentry & Joinery
  • Health and Safety and Sustainability in the Construction Industry

This course will take place at Redwood College in Greenford one day a week.  

Assessment

The course comprises of 8 units for the Certificate, 4 of which are theory based.  There will be 2 externally set exams (approx. 1hour) relating to core units.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided by the College

Qualification Target and Tiers

Course grades – Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*. Grades for each unit reflect a sliding scale of points achieved that depend on the quality of submitted coursework.

16+ Progression

Successful completion of course could support with progression to a Post 16 college. Redwood Education & Skills have opportunities for Post 16 progression to either Study Programme (Aspire) or traineeships that may ultimately lead to employment or a route into apprenticeships.

 

HAIRDRESSING & BEAUTY THERAPY STUDIES  

VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy

Course Description

This qualification is designed for anyone who may be considering a career in hairdressing and beauty therapy.  It will help you gain valuable insight into the industry and develop basic skills and relevant background knowledge.  This course will take place at Redwood College in Greenford one day a week.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to the Hair & Beauty sector
  • Introduction to the science of Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy
  • Employment standards
  • Enterprise project involving research and market development
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Colour application
  • Salon reception and client communication
  • Styling Services
  • Preparation for hair services
  • Manicures & Pedicures
  • Photographic make up

Assessment

Four units must be successfully completed to achieve certification. There will be an online, externally verified exam. All other units are coursework assessed and verified by an external assessor from VTCT.

Qualification Target and Tiers

Course grades – Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction*. Overall grades reflect a combination of these unit grades – e.g. Pass, Merit, Merit, Distinction = Merit

16+ Progression

MOTOR VEHICLE

IMI Award, Certificate & Diploma Entry 3/Level 1

Course description

This course provides an introduction to motor vehicle service.  This course will take place at Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College one day a week.

The first year of this course consists of six units covering Health and Safety and vehicle systems at an introductory level with the completion of a portfolio.

Year 2 covers a further 6 units and takes the candidate into the operating principles of vehicle systems.  Both years are a combination of practical and theory, enabling you to acquire a good understanding of vehicle technology.

Personal Protective Equipment including safety boots will be required.

Assessment

All units must be completed to achieve certification.

Qualification Target and Tiers

This course leads to a level 1 qualification equivalent to a GCSE grade D-G.

16+ Progression

You can progress on to the City & Guilds 4101-45 Progression Award in Motor Vehicle Servicing and Repair.
